Kretchman Coaching Award
A native of Doland, S.D., he graduated from the University of Mary in 1989 and earned a master's degree in health and physical education from Northern State in 1990. He was inducted into the University of Mary Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Miles, and his wife, Kari, have one daughter, Ava, and one son, Gabriel.
Miles began his coaching career as an assistant at Northern from 1989-95, where he helped lead the Wolves to five NAIA playoff appearances and five regional titles. He then moved on to Mayville State University guiding a program which previously had only four wins to a 35-22 record from 1995-97. Miles returned back to the Division II level with a position at Southwest Minnesota State University. In his four seasons as a Mustang he went 78-39, and captured the NSIC conference crown while also making an appearance at the D2 Elite Eight in his final season.
Tim then traveled to North Dakota State, where he transitioned the Bison into the Division I ranks. He spent six seasons with the Bison before accepting a position at Colorado State University. Miles and the Rams went 55-41 in the last three years of his tenure, making postseason play each time around.
Miles, the only active coach who has taken teams to the postseason at the Division I, Division II and NAIA ranks, overachieved with the Huskers in his first season at Nebraska. The Huskers posted wins over a trio of NCAA Tournament teams before capping the season with a win over Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament – the program's first Big Ten Tournament victory.
Exceeding expectations, that's what Tim Miles has done throughout his collegiate coaching career.
