Northern State Athletics Hall of Fame
Clarence Henry Schutte attended Northern from 1917-1921. He also attended the University of Minnesota where he received his bachelor of science degree and Standford University where he received his masters degree. While at Northern, Schutte was an outstanding athlete. He participated and received recognition in football, basetball, and track. An early Exponent state the he was the best all-around player in the 1920 season, and made the majority of the touchdowns. Schutte was captian of the 1920 basketball team. He was also chosen as a member of All South Dakota conference Team in 1921.
Schutte later moved to Santa Barbara where he gained fame as "the man who stopped Red Grange" in football. He was head of the athletic department at Santa Barbara High School and remained there until his retirement in 1965, ending the erea in Santa Barbara athletics. As head football coach at SBHS for 23 years, Schutte compiled a record of 174-49-6.
Schutte was raised in Hecla, South Dakota and died on November 5, 1970.
