Jake Hamik competed for the Northern State University track and field team. He received All-American honors four times in his career, 2006 Outdoor, 2007 Indoor and Outdoor, and 2008 Outdoor.

He was a 12-time Conference champion, where he dominated the 400H, taking home the title all four seasons. After his final season with the Wolves, he was awarded the Clark Swisher Award for the 2007-08 season. 

He still holds many records at NSU including: indoor: 300m (35.09) set in 2008, outdoor: 400H (50.92) set in 2007, member of the 4x110 Shuttle Hurdle relay team that set the record (1:01.34) in 2008, and he holds the Swisher Complex record for the 400H (53.52) set in 2006.
