15030Matt Skattum wrestled for the Wolves during the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. In 1995, he qualified for the NAIA national tournament where, as a freshman, he placed 7th in the 158 pound weight class. In 1996, he and his teammates wrestled as NCAA Division II wrestlers. He faced Division II and Division I wrestlers to take fourth place at the Bison Open.

In 1997, he took the NSIC title at 158 pounds and was named NSIC Wrestler of the Week after taking first at the Valley City State Invitational. He qualified for the NCAA Division II national tournament and was named to the NCAA Division II All-Academic team. In his senior season, he took first in his weight class at the NSIC Championships and fifth in the Midwest Regional. He didn’t make nationals as he battled a heart breaking knee injury. He was still named to the First Team NCAA Division II Academic All-American. He was also team captain his senior season.

Skattum was named NWCA Scholar Athlete three years straight (96, 97, and 98) and wrote for Student Publications.
