Wolves Track and Field Puts Together Strong Day from USD Early Bird

Vermillion, S.D. – The Northern State University track and field teams took on the Early Bird Meet from Vermillion, recording 28 top-10 finishes between the two squads. In addition, the Wolves tallied one event victory and three national provisional marks on the day.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jordan Menken took 14th in the shot put with a 12.98m (42-07.00) toss and eighth in the discus, throwing 41.86m (137-04.00)
  • Rachel Guthmiller threw to a sixth place finish in the javelin, notching a 38.78m (127-02.75) mark
  • Tava Berg jumped 1.65m (5-05.00) in the high jump, taking fourth overall
  • Shona Juliana added a sixth place finish in the long jump, notching a 5.55m (18-02.50) jump
  • The pole vault crew placed four in the top-11, led by Jordyn Huneke in fifth, clearing 3.80m (12-05.75)
  • Kealy Hill and Kenzee Danielson followed in ninth and tenth, jumping 3.65m (11-11.75), followed by Christine Nefgzer in 11th with a 3.50m (11-05.75) vault
  • The 4x100m relay team of Isabel Kinzer, Juliana, Shanice Burrell, and Emma Rezac took sixth with a time of 48.14
  • Jennifer Clark took 14th in the 1500m with a time of 4:53.16
  • Burrell finished as the runner-up in the 100m hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 14.22
  • Rezac and Destiny Wenger took tenth and 15th in the 400m with times of 59.24 and 1:02.08 respectively
  • Kinzer went on to finish third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.94
  • Megan Mooberry led three Wolves in the 5000m, finishing as the runner-up with a time of 18:16.76, followed by Jenna Helms and Victoria Kolbinger in tenth and 13th with times of 19:52.54 and 20:57.57
  • Northern rounded out the day with a fourth place finish in the 4x400m relay, as the squad of Kinzer, Burrell, Wenger, and Rezac notched a time of 3:58.81
 
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kelson Brewer opened his day with an eighth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.51m (14-09.75), followed by Bryce Malsam in 15th with a 4.11m (13-06.00) vault
  • Tanner Berg and Nick Olson took third and tenth in the shot put, throwing 16.95m (55-07.50) and 14.23m (46-08.25) respectively
  • Olson went on to take 11th in the discus, throwing 42.87m (140-07.75)
  • Berg took second in the hammer throw, notching a a new school record 65.83m (215-11.75) toss
  • Darrian Hood landed in the top-10 of the triple jump, taking ninth with a 13.06m (42-10.25) jump
  • The 4x100m relay team of Tafara Hondonga, Isaiha Fletcher, Riley Gauer, and Terry Towah ran to a time of 42.60 in fourth overall
  • Riccardo Done and Jorge Garcia took seventh and 13th in the 1500m with times of 3:57.75 and 4:02.74 respectively
  • Northern placed three in the 400m dash, led by Towah as the runner-up with a time of 48.57
  • Seth Martens and Fletcher took sixth and seventh, crossing the line in 49.94 and 50.36
  • Brewer added an eighth place finish in the 400m hurdles, notching a time of 56.31
  • Jackson Harrison recorded the lone event victory for the Wolves, winning the 5000m with a time of 15:03.98
  • Michael Wirth and Ricardo Chase took 14th and 15th in the event, crossing the finish line in 16:48.46 and 17:08.29
  • The Wolves rounded out the Early Bird meet taking third and tenth in the 4x400m relay; the team of Hondonga, Towah, Fletcher, and Brewer finished in 3:19.88, while the squad of Ronald Stephenson, Bryce Malsam, Caleb Schlekeway, and Martens notched a time of 3:27.74
 
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • Tanner Berg tallied national provisional marks in both the shot put and hammer throw, ranking in the top-20 nationally in the shot put and top-3 in the hammer
  • Berg's school record in the hammer broke his previous mark of 61.60m set in 2019
  • Jordyn Huneke hit a national provisional mark in the pole vault, ranking her in the top-20 nationally
