After getting off to a bit of a slow start in its match Friday night, the Northern State volleyball team made quick work of Bemidji State inside Wachs Arena as the Wolves swept the Beavers 26-24, 25-12 and 25-15.
After falling behind in the first set 20-15, the Wolves (12-3, 5-3 NSIC) responded to go on a 6-0 run to take a 21-20 lead and an 11-to-4 run to end the first set with a victory. After the opening set, it was smooth sailing as NSU didn't trail at all in the second set and finished on a 12-0 run to take an early 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third and final set, it was more of the same as Northern took control down 7-5 and ended the set and the match on a 20-8 run to close-out Bemidji.
Tori Biach and
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves with 13 kills each. Biach's 13 kills are a new career-high for the freshman and her .765 attack percentage was the second-best of the season for Biach.
Macey Finizio was the third NSU player with double-digit kills as she had 10 in the win.
Cari McGarvie and
Jussy Tuscherer added six and three kills, respectively. The duo also accounted for both of Northern's two service aces in the match.
Drew Smith racked up 41 assists (13.67 per set) in the victory and also had six digs. Libero
Sami Nygaard led the Wolves' back line with 16 digs while Tuscherer added eight and Chambers had seven.
As a team, the Wolves hit .368 on the night which is their second-best output of the season and the seventh time this season Northern has hit better than .300. BSU meanwhile hit just .090 which is the sixth time an NSU opponent has hit below .100.
Northern returns to action Saturday to finish its four-game homestand as Minnesota, Crookston comes to town for a 5 p.m. match.
