Hutzler and Hill Lead Wolves with NSIC Championships on Day Two

Duluth, Minn. – The men's and women's track and field teams combined for two NSIC Champions and  nine All-Conference performances on Friday from the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In addition, four student-athletes advanced out of prelims and into the Saturday finals. The Northern State women sit third in the standings with 45 points, while the men come in fifth with 32 points.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dakota Hutzler led off the day for the Wolves with the first NSIC Championship in the heptathlon, notching marks of 5.07m (16-07.75) in the long jump, 33.25m (109-01.25) in the javelin, and 2:29.53 in the 800m for a point total of 4,464
  • Megan Mooberry landed on the podium in the 10,000m run, taking eighth with a time of 37:35.54
  • Shanice Burrell advanced to the Saturday finals of the 100m hurdles with the fourth fastest time of the day, 14.24
  • Tava Berg took second in the high jump, clearing a national provisional mark of 1.68m (5-06.00)
  • Kealy Hill defended her 2019 pole vault NSIC Championship, winning the event again with a provisional jump of 3.86m (12-08.00)
  • Jordyn Huneke followed as the pole vault runner-up, jumping 3.86m as well
  • Shona Juliana broke her own school record in the long jump, taking second overall with a 5.72m (18-09.25) mark
 
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bryce Malsam concluded the decathlon, taking third with 6,112 points; recording marks of 15.54 in the 110m hurdles, 29.42m (96-06.25) in the discus, 4.30m (14-01.25) in the pole vault, 42.15m (138-03.50) in the javelin, and 5:28.33 in the 1500m
  • Jorge Garcia opened the individual events with a seventh place finish in the 10,000m run, notching a time of 32:20.26
  • Riccardo Done recorded the first runner-up finish of the day for NSU, in the 3000m steeplechase with a school record and national provisional time of 9:08.88
  • Seth Martens and Tafara Hondonga advanced to finals in the 400m run, notching times of 48.78 and 49.38 in second and seventh
  • Kelson Brewer will advance to the 400m hurdle finals, sitting third with a time of 54.73
  • Tanner Berg tallied second place finishes in both the hammer throw and shot put, tossing 60.90m (199-10.00) and 17.36m (56-11.50) respectively
 
BEYONG THE RESULTS
  • Riccardo Done's school record of 9:08.88 broke the previous mark of 9:25.87 set by Matt Walberg in 2008
  • Shona Juliana broke her school record set at the NSU Open in the long jump but just over three inches
  • Tanner Berg's shot put mark of 17.36m is a national provisional mark, which moves him up into the top-20 of the event
