Wolves Dominate The Cougars in Their First Win of The Season

Morris, Minn. – Northern State swimming dominated in the pool Friday evening, recording their first win of the 2019-20 season versus the University of Minnesota Morris.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Wolves swam away with tonight's dual against the Cougars as they swept 7-of-13 events
  • NSU notched a first place finish in the 400 medley composed of Hannah Kiernan, Shayna Asuncion, Lauren Forsyth and Connor Doran in 4:16.38
  • Emma Murdock, Annalise Bishop, Marialuisa Avila, and Melani Mercer swam a 4:22.21 in the 400 medley taking second
  • Delaney Ryken and Jordan Metz went one- two in the 1000 free with times of 11:25.67 and 11:54.05
  • Doran, Forsyth and Murdock notched the top three spots in the 200 free for NSU touching the wall within seconds of each other
  • Avila swam into her 50 free with a season best of 25.76
  • Asuncion won the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.03 followed by Lexie Malimanek in third at 2:27.93, Kennedy Davis in fourth at 2:32.65, and Delanee Grier in fifth with 2:34.23
  • Northern State locked up the top four spots in the 100 fly led by Avila at 1:00.39; Doran followed in second at 1:03.10, Ryken third in at 1:06.79, and Malimanek in fourth with a time 1:07.10
  • NSU recorded first and second place finishes in the 100 free as Josie Gillund swam a 55.60 and Cassie Williams swam a 57.49
  • The Wolves followed one-two-three in the 200 back with Kiernan leading the way in 2:17.22, followed by Mercer and Murdock with times of 2:24.17 and 2:25.44 respectively
  • Gillund, Collingwood, and Metz finished one through three in the 500 free for Northern, all placing within 20 seconds of each other
  • Northern State went one through four in the 200 breast led by Grier in 2:40.46, Kiernan following at 2:44.95, Bishop in third at 2:45.87 and Forsyth in fourth at 2:52.68
  • Both Wolves 400 free relay teams swam strong as they went one- two within .40 seconds of each other
  • Northern State's 400 relay team of Ryken, Williams, Davis, and Malimanek won the race in 3:55.58, while the squad of Gillund, Collingwood, Maycie Olson, and Metz took second with a time of 3:55.98
 
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • Avila recorded individual first place wins in both her 50 free and 100 fly
  • Gillund also notched individual top finished in the 100 free and 500 free
  • NSU tallied 27 top-three finishes and 11 first-place finishes in the dual
 
UP NEXT
The Wolves take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State next weekend on the road. The dual is set to begin at 5 p.m. on Friday
