Wolves Split on the First Day in Tucson

Tucson, Ariz. – The Northern State University baseball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Tucson Invitational Games. The Wolves defeated Carthage College in the first game 19-5 in seven innings to start the day but fell to St. Cloud State in game two 9-7. NSU is 1-1 on the year.

The Wolves bats started off hot against Carthage scoring multiple runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth inning. In the third inning, Lucas Lorenz hit a grand slam to bring the Wolves within one run and a double by Seth Sullwold gave the Wolves the lead after three innings. Northern State added two more runs in the third inning on doubles by Sam McMacken and Jack Schmidt. The fifth inning, Kolin Kubitz had a solo home run and Schmidt hit another run-scoring double. The Wolves picked up six runs in the sixth inning and three of those runs were off of Kubitz second home run of the game.

Kubitz led the Wolves going 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and four runs batted in. Lorenz had two hits and three runs batted in. Ben Carolin had three hits and scored four runs for the Wolves. Schmidt had two hits, three runs batted in, and scored a run. McMacken had two hits, two runs batted in, and scored one run. Sullwold had two hits and two runs batted in. Mikey Adams had one hit, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Dakota Stilson had one hit and scored twice.
Zach Hartford started on the mound for the Wolves going five innings giving up seven hits, one earned run, two walks, and one strikeout. Colton Landreth finished the game pitching two innings, two hits, and four strikeouts.

In game two the Wolves fell short 9-7 to St. Cloud State University. Northern State took an early lead in the second inning score four in the top of the inning. The Huskies scored one in the second and two in the third to cut the lead to one. NSU had back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead back to three. Both teams traded a run in the fifth and sixth inning before SCSU added five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Wolves threatened in the top of the ninth but left the bases loaded.

Schmidt led the Wolves with four hits, one run, and two runs batted in. Stilson had three hits in the game and scored once. Kubitz hit a three-run home run in the second inning for his only hit. Lorenz hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for his only hit of the game. Hayden Hall had one hit, one run batted in, and scored one run. Adams had one hit in the second game and scored twice.

Luke Chevalier started on the hill for the Wolves going five innings, five hits, gave up three earned runs, four walks, and five strikeouts. Nate Zeise went 2.1 innings, four hits, three earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts. Tyler Jones took the loss for the Wolves going one-third of an inning giving up one hit, and two earned runs. Brock Ragatz struck out the only batter he faced.

Northern returns to action tomorrow for one contest against St. Cloud State University at 1:30 (CT).
