Tucson Ariz. – The Northern State University baseball team split on the last day of their spring trip against Concordia-St. Paul, winning game one 5-2 and losing game two 2-0. The Wolves will finish the week with a 5-4 record overall heading into conference play.
Northern took the early leading pushing across two runs on two hits in their first at-bats of the game. NSU added one run in the third inning on three hits, extending their lead to 3-0. Concordia-St. Paul answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, however the Wolves added two more in the top of the sixth, sealing the 3-run victory.
Jack Schmidt went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the team, notching two runs scored.
Dakota Stilson also went 2-for-4, while
Lucas Lorenz,
Hayden Hall,
Sam McMacken, and
Justin Barreneche each tallied one hit. Lorenz and McMacken each notched a double, while Barreneche tallied a triple. Lorenz, Barreneche, and
Carter Erickson each recorded a run scored, while
Ben Carolin, Lorenz and Barreneche notched an RBI. Hall led the team with two RBI as well.
Luke Chevalier earned his first win of the season going six complete innings, giving up two runs on five hits, with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Thomas Sertic entered to throw the seventh and picked up his first save of the year. The senior gave up just one hit in the inning.
In game two, Concordia-St. Paul scored one run on three hits in the top of the first and added one more run in the second. The Wolves had their opportunities, leaving the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the sixth after a failed squeeze attempt and strikeout. NSU was unable to push a run across on the CSP starter, Mendez.
Seth Sullwold notched the only hit for the Wolves in the game.
Sam Krapf suffered the loss throwing six innings. The senior gave up two runs on seven hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Brock Ragatz entered in the seventh throwing one shutout inning for the Wolves.
The Wolves are back in action next Saturday and Sunday in Sioux Falls for the opener of NSIC play, against the Vikings of Augustana University. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday from Ronken Field.
