The 25
th-ranked Northern State volleyball team overcame a slow start to pick up its seventh consecutive win and 11
th sweep of the season Friday night as the Wolves defeated Winona State 26-24, 25-22 and 26-24 in Wachs Arena.
After getting off to a sluggish start to begin the match, Northern (17-3, 10-3 NSIC) found itself trailing 23-19 in set one. After an NSU timeout, the Wolves went on four-point run to tie the game at 23-23. The Wolves responded again facing set point at 24-23 by scoring three-straight points to give Northern a 26-24 victory in the opening set.
In set two, Northern found itself down 17-15, but again responded with a run to take a 20-17 lead and hold on for the 25-22 win. Set three was similar to the first set, only this time, Winona (8-14, 5-8 NSIC) responded facing match point at 24-22 to tie the set up at 24 all. The Wolves responded to score the next two points and secure the sweep.
Kelsey Chambers had a solid night to lead the Wolves offense as she recorded 19 kills and also had seven digs.
Tori Biach added six kills while hitting .462.
Macey Finizio,
Cari McGarvie and
Jussy Tuscherer each added five kills apiece. Tuscherer added 11 digs while McGarvie had two service aces, and, along with
Drew Smith led the Wolves with two blocks.
Smith picked up her sixth double-double of the season as she recorded 35 assists and led Northern with 15 digs in the match.
Sami Nygaard and
Renee Hoffman each had solid matches in the back for Northern. Nygaard recorded 12 digs and also set a career-high with five assists in the sweep. While Hoffman chipped in with 11 digs of her own.
It was a sloppy match at times as neither team hit very well. Northern hit .181 on the night while WSU hit at a .161 clip and had seven more attack errors than the Wolves. Northern was cleaner at the service line however, recording just one error and three aces while the Warriors had six errors.
The Wolves look to make it a sweep for the week as Upper Iowa comes to town Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.
