ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Upper Iowa University Peacocks held Northern State to just one run for the third straight game in an 8-1 victory to open Sunday's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball action before rallying for a 6-3 win over the Wolves in the series finale to complete the four-game sweep.
The Wolves end their 2011 season at 11-25 overall and 9-19 in conference action. UIU closes out its campaign at 24-26 overall and an even 18-18 in the loop.
Down 2-0 after three and a half innings, the Wolves cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when
Zach Miller doubled home
Ronnie Sellers from first.
UIU, however, put up a 3-spot in the top of the fifth and added two more unearned in the sixth to break open the game before scoring their final run in the seventh.
Sean Winslow took the loss for the Wolves, going four and two-thirds, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out two. Brett Westra picked up the win for Upper Iowa, holding the Wolves to just three hits and one run in his seven innings, striking out six.
The Wolves again found themselves in a 2-0 deficit after the Peacocks capitalized on a Northern State error to score two unearned runs for the early lead. NSU got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first on a Miller sacrifice fly that scored Jesse Gonzales.
Senior
Kelly Coates then drove in the Wolves' next two runs with a game-tying double in the second and an RBI single in the fourth. Both hits plated senior
Michael Cross, who had drawn one-out walks in each inning.
Upper Iowa's Matt Treybig, however, settled into rhythm after the fourth, setting the Wolves down in order in their remaining five at bats. The Peacock offense came back to life in the top of the sixth, getting a big two-out two-RBI double from Tyler Adams to regain the lead. UIU added a sixth run in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.
Trebig's complete-game effort netted him the victory for the Peacocks, allowing three runs on four hits, three walks and six strikeouts.
NSU starter
Robbie Rocamora absorbed the loss for the Wolves, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out four in his five and two-thirds innings of work.
Thane Lees closed out the game, going the final three and a third innings and allowing four hits, one run a walk and a strikeout.
