ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Northern State University women's basketball team turned in their best shooting night of the year and combined that with their lowest turnover total of the season en route to an 86-71 victory over the visiting Marauders of the University of Mary Saturday at Wachs Arena on the campus of Northern State University.
A season-high 5,454 fans watched the Wolves put five players in double figures for the first time this season on their way to their highest point-total of the year. Freshman
Emily Becken led the way with 16 points on 5-9 shooting, while fellow freshmen
Mikayla Barondeau and
Maggie Bryant chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively. Barondeau and
Jenna Higgins led the team with nine rebounds a piece, while Barondeau also added to her top-10 NSIC free-throw percentage in going 10-10 from the charity stripe. Sophomores
Megan Kusler and
Krista Rabenberg each contributed 10 points as well.
The Wolves entered halftime down 38-34 and fell to 10 points down with 17:54 remaining in the second half, but put together a 14-0 run that that was capped by an
Emily Becken jumper which put the Wolves up 53-49 with 13:31 to go in the game. From that point on the Wolves never looked back as they improved to 4-3 in the Northern Sun, and 8-6 overall in 2008-2009.
The Wolves are in action again next Friday and Saturday, January 16th and 17th, as they play host to Bemidji State and Minnesota-Duluth in a two-game home-stand.
