WAYNE, Neb. - The Northern State women's basketball team pulled off another come-from-behind victory, downing Colorado Christian 76-66 Saturday afternoon at the Wildcat Classic. Senior forward
Noelle Hall led the charge with 11 rebounds and a career high 33 points. She is the first NSU player to reach the 30-point mark since Jammie Coyle scored 31 points in February of 2000.
The Wolves had another strong shooting performance, finishing the game with 25-of-51 field goals made (49.0%). Hall was a key to Northern's success in the first half, hitting nine of the team's 14 field goals. The Wolves went into the halftime break trailing the Cougars 35-38 after giving up nine three-point shots in the first half.
Colorado Christian tied their largest lead of the game at the 12:28 mark of the second half, 47-41, with Talmai Aguirre's sixth three-pointer.
Jaclyn Arns (Sr., St. Michael, Minn.) and
Jessica Deinert (Jr., Mt. Vernon, S.D.) combined for five unanswered points and Hall (Sr., Altura, Minn.) laid in a bucket at the 9:35 mark to give the Wolves their first lead of the second half. Hall hit the boards hard, pulling down ten of her final 11 rebounds in the second half and giving NSU opportunities to score.
Continued success from the field and defensive stops kept the score climbing for Northern. Arns and Hall went on a scoring spree starting around the eight minute mark, tallying 18 of NSU's next 20 points as the Wolves went on a 20-10 run. Arns had 11 of these points as Northern took a 71-59 lead with under two minutes to play. The Wolves clung to their double figure lead until the play clock expired. A final 35-19 scoring push gave NSU the 76-66 win.
Hall finished the game shooting an amazing 77.8 percent from the field with 14-of-18 field goals and five free throws for a career high 33 points. She completed the double-double with 11 rebounds. Arns had 14 points in the game, all of which came in the second half.
Megan Kusler (So., Aberdeen, S.D.) also had a career high night with nine points and six rebounds. Senior Kim Lewis (Barnesville, Minn.) led the squad with five assists.
The Wolves hit 25 field goals (25-51) and 22 free throws (22-35) in the win over the Cougars. They led the rebounding front with 76 boards to CCU's 66 and also had 15 assists.
Colorado Christian was paced by Aguirre, who hit six treys in the game and had 20 total points. Ainsley Barratt had 12 points, followed by Abby Rosenthal with ten. The Cougars were led on the boards by Sara Davis with eight. The team shot just 29.2 percent from the field, launching up 72 shot attempts in the game.
The Wolves will play their home opener on Tuesday, November 27, hosting top-ranked North Dakota in a 6:00 p.m. meeting at Wachs Arena.
