Wolves Set to do Battle with Augustana in NSIC Quarterfinals

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State women's basketball team advanced to the NSIC Tournament Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season and are set to match-up with (RV) Augustana on Sunday morning. The Wolves and Vikings are scheduled for an 11 a.m. tip-off at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • Northern State enters the quarterfinals with an 18-11 (12-10 NSIC) record after finishing the season tied for sixth overall in the NSIC and tied for third in the North Division
  • The 2022-23 season has marked the most overall and conference wins, and best conference finish for the Wolves since 2017-18 when they went 26-6 (19-3 NSIC), sharing the NSIC Overall & North Division titles
  • Northern State is making their 21st all-time appearance in the NSIC Tournament, entering the quarterfinals with a record of 27-19 in tournament games and have won two tournament championships in program history (2015 & 2017)
  • NSU advanced to the Sanford Pentagon with a 63-49 first round victory over Upper Iowa in Wachs Arena, the Wolves ended the game on an 18-2 scoring run after falling behind by two early in the fourth quarter; Kailee Oliverson took control of the game for NSU recording her fourth double-double in the last five games with a career-high 34 points and 17 rebounds
  • NSU enters Sunday having won five straight games and are 9-3 in their last 12 games
  • The NSIC released the 2022-23 women's basketball all-conference teams on Thursday morning with Oliverson making her second consecutive appearance on the All-NSIC First Team while Laurie Rogers earned her first all-conference honor of her career with All-NSIC Second Team recognition
  • Oliverson leads a trio of Wolves who average double figures in scoring with 15.5 points per game this season, while Rogers and Rianna Fillipi add 11.4 and 11.2 points per game respectively
  • Oliverson is averaging 20.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.5 blocks in the past 12 games while she is shooting the ball 48.5 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from 3-point range, and 81.0 percent from the free throw line during those games
  • Oliverson leads NSU with 7.6 rebounds per game and Rogers is a close second with 7.2 rebounds; Oliverson and Rogers have each recorded double digit rebounds in eight games this season
  • Fillipi is averaging a team-best 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game
  • Alayna Benike has knocked down a team-high 28 3-pointers this season while shooting the ball 32.2 percent from beyond the arc, Jordyn Hilgemann (26), Fillipi (22), and Rachel Garvey (10) are the only other players to make ten or more this season
  • Northern State leads NCAA Division II with the fewest turnovers per game, averaging 11.1 turnovers; the Wolves are 10-3 in games where they commit ten or fewer turnovers
  • Northern also ranks fifth nationally with 5.0 blocked shots per game this season as Rogers (2.3) and Oliverson (1.0) lead the team in blocks, NSU has recorded five or more blocked shots in 15 contests this season with a record of 12-3 in those match-ups
  • Rogers led the NSIC with 2.3 blocks per game in conference match-ups, and currently ranks second nationally in total blocks (67) and is sixth in blocks per game (2.31) in all regular season games
  • As a team Northern State ranks 22nd nationally with a 1.15 assist/turnover ratio, led by Fillipi with a 2.06 assist/turnover ratio of her own
(RV) AUGUSTANA STORYLINES
  • Augustana enters Sunday's Quarterfinals with a record of 24-4 (18-4 NSIC) after finishing the regular season third overall in the NSIC and second in the South Division
  • While the Vikings are currently receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Coaches' Poll, Augie also currently sits at No. 5 in the second NCAA Central Region Poll
  • Augustana received a bye for the first round of the NSIC Tournament and has not played since last weekend when the recorded a sweep against Southwest Minnesota State (88-56) and on the road against cross-town rival Sioux Falls (76-47)
  • Aislinn Duffy highlighted the NSIC All-Conference release for the Vikings, earning NSIC South Division Player of the Year and All-NSIC First Team honors alongside Lauren Sees; Michaela Jewett was named All-NSIC Second Team
  • Duffy leads the Vikings trio in scoring with 16.4 points per game while Sees and Jewett averaged 15.4 and 12.4 respectively
  • Duffy also leads Augie with 8.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, and she led the NSIC with 11 double-doubles this season
  • Kenzie Rensch is averaging a team-best 3.0 steals per game and Jennifer Aadland recorded a team-high of 1.3 blocks per game
  • Augustana has the second best scoring margin in the NSIC at +14.9, the Vikings average 75.9 points per game while limiting their opponents to 61.0; Augie is 19-0 when scoring 70 or more points this season and are only 5-4 when failing to reach that mark
  • Dave Krauth is in his 34th and final season as the head women's basketball coach at Augustana, holding a career coaching record of 694-300 with the Vikings

  • Northern State defeated (RV) Augustana 62-60 in Wachs Arena on January 6th, as Rianna Fillipi capped a fourth quarter comeback for the Wolves with the game-winning layup with 1.6 seconds remaining in the contests
