Northern State Opens Indoor Season with a Bang

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University track and field teams hosted the NSU Open on Saturday to kick off the 2022-23 indoor season. The Wolves recorded 20 events wins from the meet, between the men and the women.
 
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jackson Harrison and Josh Martin competed Friday evening from the SDSU Holiday Open
  • Harrison tallied a runner-up finish in the 3000m with a time of 8:30.10, while Martin took third in the mile with a new school record and national provisional mark of 4:10.18
  • Nick Olson won the weight throw, tossing 16.68m, followed by McCaden Anderson in third with a 15.96m toss
  • In the first long jump competition of his career, Max Vande Kieft won the event with a 5.99m mark
  • Vande Kieft went on to win the high jump clearing 1.88m, alongside teammate Vance Borchers
  • Carter Moller took third in the high jump with a 1.78m mark
  • Borchers and Moller went one-two in the triple jump with marks of 12.01m and 11.86m respectively
  • Ethan Barnett led three Wolves at the top of the shot put placings, throwing 14.34m
  • Olson and Anderson took second and third in the shot put, tossing 13.95m and 13.52m respectively
  • Dan Istvanovich and Caleb Schlekeway took first and second in the 400m dash with times of 56.09 and 56.53
  • Northern went one-two-three in the 55m dash as Noah Bayer, Joel Matehs, and Issac Olson ran to times of 6.63, 6.79, and 6.88
  • Bayer added his second win of the day in the 200m dash, crossing the finish line in 23.82
  • Joel Matehs and Jaden Bohms-Buechler took first and third in the 55m hurdles with times of 8.03 and 8.64
  • The 4x400 relay team of Matehs, Istvanovich, Moller, and Schlekeway won the race finishing in 3:41.64
  • Northern took the top five spots in the pole vault, led by Glen Quayle and Sam Tremelling clearing 4.70m and 4.43m
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shawney Coenraad and Cassidy Gough took first and second in the weight throw, tossing 15.73m and 15.50m respectively
  • Sierra Sweeney finished as the runner-up in the long jump with a 4.77m mark and won the triple jump with a 10.88m jump
  • Kamryn Schwartz took third in the triple jump with a 10.28m mark
  • Jordan Tschumperlin tallied her first win of the season in the high jump, notching a 1.58m mark, followed by Emily Breske in third jumping 1.53m
  • Kenzee Danielson won the pole vault, clearing 3.53m, followed by Bethany Dybdahl and Kealy Hill in second with a mark of 3.38m
  • Renea Taylor won the 55m dash, crossing the finish line in 7.06, and the 200m dash with a time of 25.29
  • Taylor added her third win of the day in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.30, followed by Morgan Sheldon in second with a time of 8.95
  • Vanessa Klein and Lyla Devereaux tallied second and third place finishes in the 400m with times of 1:02.77 and 1:05.51 respectively
  • Jennifer Clark, Mary Franssen, and Summer Carlson placed first through third in the 800m with times of 2:18.93, 2:19.02, and 2:29.95
  • The 4x400 relay team of Klein, Carlson, Sheldon, and Sweeney won the race with a time of 4:22.79
 
BEYOND THE RESULTS
  • Martin broke the mile school record previously held by Matt Walberg with a time of 4:15.43 set back in 2006

Northern heads to the Dakota Wesleyan Early Bird next Friday and Saturday, December 9-10, in Mitchell.
