Northern State Ready to Defend Home Court on I Hate Winter Weekend

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State women's basketball team is set to host Upper Iowa and Winona State for the annual I Hate Winter weekend. The Wolves and Peacocks will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and the Wolves and Warriors are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

NORTHERN STATE STORYLINES
  • Northern State enters the weekend with a record of 9-7 (6-5 NSIC), the Wolves are currently tied for sixth overall in the NSIC and are fourth in the north division
  • Northern extended their win streak to three games and remained undefeated against NSIC South opponents last weekend with a sweep of Southwest Minnesota State (74-64) and Sioux Falls (60-59)
  • Following a big weekend on the court, Laurie Rogers was named NSIC North Division Player of the Week, averaging 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 5.5 blocks per game in the two contests
  • Rogers leads the NSIC and is third nationally with 3.4 blocks per game, she has recorded five or more blocks in four consecutive games and six times this season
  • With a layup in the second quarter of Friday's game against SMSU, Lexi Roe became the 35th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and the 25th player to reach 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds
  • This season NSU is averaging 65.6 points, 40.0 rebounds, 10.6 assists, 14.9 turnovers, 6.6 steals, and 4.6 blocks per game
  • The Wolves are shooting the ball 40.0 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from 3-point range, and 74.8 percent from the free throw line
  • Northern State remains the league leader and are 44th nationally in rebounding margin at 6.5, the Wolves have recorded a double digit rebound margin on four different occasions this season
  • NSU's 234 made free throws ranks 17th nationally and second in the NSIC, they average 14.6 made free throws per game
  • While Rianna Fillipi leads the team in assists (5.1) and steals (2.3), she is one of only ten players nationally to average 12.0+ points, 4.0+ rebounds, 5.0+ assists, and 2+ steals per game
  • Kailee Oliverson leads four Northern players averaging double figures in scoring with 13.9 points per game, which is tied for ninth in the NSIC
UPPER IOWA STORYLINES
  • Upper Iowa enters the weekend with a record of 4-12 (1-9 NSIC), the Peacocks are currently 15th overall in the NSIC and are eighth place in the south division
  • UIU went 2-1 last weekend, earning wins over in-state foe Waldorf (79-38) and NSIC leader St. Cloud State (67-54), prior to falling to Minnesota Duluth (55-42) in the weekend finale
  • This season Upper Iowa is averaging 64.4 points, 38.2 rebounds, 12.4 assists, 13.9 turnovers, 6.6 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game
  • The Peacocks are shooting the ball 37.0 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from 3-point range, and 73.1 percent from the free throw line
  • Lydia Haack and Jessica Musgrave each average 13.5 points per game to lead the team in scoring, while Brooke Evenson also adds 10.9 points per game
  • Musgrave and Evenson lead the Peacocks in rebounding, averaging 7.1 and 6.1 per game respectively; both are a double-double threat as Musgrave has recorded three and Evenson four this season
  • Evenson is tied for third in the conference in 3-pointers made per game this season, averaging 2.3 made per game while shooting 33.6 percent
  • Haack leads the team with 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game

  • Northern State and Upper Iowa last matched-up on the hardwood on January 3, 2020, when the Wolves earned a 77-59 victory in Wachs Arena
  • Northern leads the all-time series 21-1, and have won 16 consecutive games in the series
WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Winona State enters this weekend with a record of 7-9 (4-8 NSIC), the Warriors are currently 14th overall in the NSIC and are seventh in the south division
  • WSU went winless last weekend, losing to Minnesota Duluth (61-47) and St. Cloud State (69-60)
  • This season Winona State is averaging 61.8 points, 33.6 rebounds, 11.5 assists, 14.3 turnovers, 6.3 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game
  • The Warriors are shooting the ball 42.1 percent from the field, 28.2 percent from 3-point range, and 76.6 percent from the free throw line
  • Taylor Hustad leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 11.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game

  • Emily Kieck is the only other Warrior to average double figures in scoring, adding 10.4 points per game while leading the team in assists with 3.5 per game
