Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University women's basketball team (4-8, 3-7 NSIC North) concludes their season this weekend on the road against MSU Moorhead (6-4, 5-3 NSIC North). Friday's game will tip-off at 6 p.m. and Saturday's at 2 p.m. from the Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
The Wolves split last weekend's series with Minot State, winning the first game, 87-58 with a season-high in both scoring and margin of victory. NSU fell in the second match-up with the Beavers, 65-56 after being outscored 40-11 in the fourth quarter.
Four Wolves scored in double figures in Friday's 29-point victory, led by forwards
Alayna Johnson and
Laurie Rogers coming off the bench. Johnson recorded 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 3-of-4 on 3-point attempts while Rogers scored 13 points in her 14 minutes.
Freshman point guard
Rianna Fillipi continues to anchor Northern's offense and defense, recording 13 points as well as team-highs in assists and steals in Friday's win. The true freshman leads the team in minutes played, assists and steals on the season.
MSU Moorhead enters the final weekend of the regular season 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the division. The Dragons are led by junior center Peyton Boom who averages 14.0 points per game while also leading the team in field goal percentage and rebounds per game.
Northern lost both contests against MSU Moorhead in the 2019-20 season by scores of 73-65 in Moorhead and 77-58 in Wachs Arena, but lead the all-time series with the Dragons 46-28.
While NSU can jump as high as fifth in the NSIC North this weekend, the Wolves are out of contention for a spot in the NSIC/Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament due to the tournament's condensed field for the season, meaning these will be the final two games for the Northern State women in the 2020-21 season.
