Wolves Extend Win Streak to Four, Recording a Sweep Against Warriors

Winona M.N. – The Northern State University baseball team picked up their fourth straight win, with a sweep over Winona State 6-4 and 13-11. With the sweep, the Wolves improve to 19-17 overall and 12-12 in NSIC play.

Northern State starting the scoring on a leadoff solo home run by Ben Carolin to take an early lead. Winona State tied the game at one after one inning of play. Warriors scored runs in the second and third inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Wolves. NSU scored three runs in the sixth inning on a double by Dakota Stilson that scored Jack Schmidt and Carolin, later in the inning Stilson scored on a wild pitch to take a 4-3. Winona State answered with one run in the sixth inning to tie the game at six going to the seventh inning. The Wolves scored two runs in the seventh inning by a Schmidt double that scored Mikey Adams, and a single by Stilson that scored by Schmidt.

Stilson lead the Wolves recording a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate scoring one run and driving in three runs. Adams tallied two hits in three plate appearances in game one scoring one run. Schmidt and Carolin each tallied 1-for-3 at the plate scoring two runs and driving in one run. Justin Barreneche notched one hit in three plate appearances.

Colton Landreth started the game on the mound going to 3.0 innings giving up one run on five hits, walked two, and stuck out four. Tyler Jones was the first pitcher out of the pen going 2.0 innings not allowing a run giving up three hits and striking out one. Brock Ragatz pitched 0.2 allowed one earned run, two hits, and struck out one. Holt Hunziker picked up his second win of the season recording the last out of the sixth inning. Luke Chevalier picked up his second save of the season pitching 1.0 innings giving up one hit and striking out two.

NSU picked up the scoring in the second inning on a run batted in single by Hall that scored Barreneche. Winona State answered with three in the bottom of the inning to take an early 3-1. NSU picked one run in the third inning on an infield single from Barreneche that scored Stilson from second base. Winona State picked up five runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead over the Wolves through four innings. Northern State picked up one run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Hall that scored Schmidt. Wolves scored five runs in the seventh inning by a double by Sam McMacken that scored Hall A single by Adams that scored Carter Erickson, a double by Carolin that scored Adams and Kubitz, Schmidt smacked a double down the right field line that scored Carolin to tie the game at eight. NSU scored five more runs in the ninth inning on a single by Stilson that scored Kubitz, an infield single by Barreneche that scored Schmidt, and a bases clearing triple that scored Stilson, Lucas Lorenz, and Barreneche to take a 13-8 lead heading to the last half inning. Winona State pushed three runs in the ninth inning but was not enough as the Wolves take game two 13-11.

Hall recorded a 4-for-5 performance at the plate scoring one run and tallied four runs batted in. Barreneche tallied three hits in five plate appearances notching two runs scored and two runs batted in. Schmidt recorded three hits in five plate appearances scoring two runs and drove in one run. Kolin Kubitz notched a 2-for-3 performance scoring two runs. Carolin notched two hits in six appearances scoring one run and driving in two runs. Stilson tallied one hit, scored two runs, and recorded one run batted in. Lorenz recorded one hit in four plate appearances scoring one run. Adams recorded two hits in game two with one run scored and recording one run batted in. McMacken notched one hit in two plate appearances driving in one run.

Thomas Sertic started on the mound going 3.1 innings allowing five runs, on five hits, walked two, and recorded two strikeouts. Mike Wiesmann pitched 0.2 innings out of the pen allowing three runs on five hits, and struck out one. Andrew Nichols pitched 2.2 innings not allowing a run giving up one hit, two walks, and recorded two strikeouts. Holt Hunziker picked up his second win in as many games going 1.1 innings giving up three runs, on three hits, and walked two. Luke Chevalier picked up his second consecutive save pitching 1.0 innings giving up one hit and struck out one.

Wolves are back in action tomorrow against Winona State for a NSIC doubleheader. First pitch is schedule for 12 p.m. against the Warriors.
