Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team lost game one 4-5 against Concordia-St. Paul and bounced back in an elimination game against Wayne State and won 12-6. After the day, the Wolves record moves to 22-19.
In game one, Concordia-St. Paul scored one run in the first inning to take an early lead. Northern State answered with one run in the third inning on a double down the line by
Jack Schmidt that scored
Mikey Adams. Concordia scored one run in the eighth inning to take a 1-2 lead heading into the final inning. NSU scored three run in the top of the ninth inning by an error that scored
Lucas Lorenz and pinch runner Jeffery Disla. Later on in the inning, on a
Justin Barreneche single that scored
Hayden Hall to take a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Golden Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come back and beat the Wolves 4-5.
Lorenz notched two hits in four plate appearances and scored a run in game one. Barreneche recorded one hit in four plate appearances and drove in one run.
Jordan Malainey tallied a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. Adams recorded one hit and scored one run.
Jack Schmidt tallied one hit and notched one run batted in.
Dakota Stilson recorded one hit and his pinch runner Disla scored later in the inning.
Luke Chevalier took the loss going 8.1 innings giving up four earned runs, on five hits, walked one batter and struck out eight.
Mike Wiesmann gave up two hits and walked one in relief.
Game two started with four runs in the first inning with a lead-off home run by
Ben Carolin, later in the inning Schmidt and Lorenz scored on a wild pitch, Malainey grounded out to the second base that scored that scored Hall to take a 4-0 lead. Wayne State picked up two runs in the first inning and NSU lead after one inning 4-2. Wolves added one run in the third inning on a wild pitch that scored Lorenz. Northern State added five runs in the fourth inning on a Schmidt single that scored Carolin, Hall singled to centerfield that scored Schmidt. Malainey walked with the bases loaded that scored Lorenz, and Adams singled to centerfield that scored Barreneche and Hall. Wayne State added one run in the fifth inning to bring the NSU lead to 10-3. On the second pitch of the sixth inning Lorenz broke the school record for career home runs in NSU history with a solo home run. Later in the sixth inning, Kubitz singled to centerfield that scored Barreneche to take a 12-3 lead after six innings. Wayne State added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning but was not enough as the Wolves picked up an elimination victory 12-6.
Lorenz led the Wolves going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and drove in one run. Schmidt tallied two hits in six plated appearances scoring two runs Kubitz notched two hits in five plate appearances and also drove in one run. Carolin notched one hit, scored twice, and drove in one run. Stilson recorded a 1-for-5 day at the plate. Hall notched one hit, scored twice, and drove in one run. Malainey knocked in two runs on one hit in three plate appearances. Adams notched one hit and drove in two runs.
Colton Landreth picked up his first win of the season going 5.0 innings giving up three runs, on six hits, walked one, and struck out four.
Tyler Jones pitched 3.0 innings in relief giving up three runs on six hits and tallied two strikeouts.
Andrew Nichols pitched the ninth inning and struck out the side.
Wolves are back Friday in an elimination contest against the No. 1 seed Minot State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 against the Beavers at Karras Park on the campus of Augustana University.
