Schmidt Hits Game-Winning Double in Game Two to Split With Marauders

Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team split with University of Mary 3-4 and 7-4 on Sunday. With the split, the Wolves move to 13-15 overall and 5-10 in conference play.

In game one, Northern State scored two runs in the third inning on a Jack Schmidt infield single that scored Hayden Hall. Later in the inning, Lucas Lorenz notched a single that scored Schmidt to take a 2-0 lead through three innings. University of Mary scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead heading to the last half inning. Four walks in the seventh inning pushed one run across but couldn't get the second as the Wolves fall in game one.

Hall and Schmidt led the Wolves with 2-for-3 performances at the plate, Schmidt also drove in a run. Ben Carolin and Justin Barreneche each tallied a hit in game one for NSU. Lucas Lorenz recorded one hit in two plate appearances while driving in a run. Dakota Stilson went 1-for-3 in the loss, while Adams worked a bases loaded walk to record a run batted in.

Luke Chevalier started on the mound and took the no-decision going 4.0 innings, giving up five hits, two runs, four walks, and two strikeouts. Grant Farmer took the loss in relief moving to 0-1 on the season going 2.0 innings, giving up one hit, one earned run, two walks, and struck out three. Andrew Nichols pitched the seventh inning gave up one run on one hit.

Northern State started the scoring in game two with a run batted in single by Schmidt that scored Carolin who double to start the inning. Marauders answered with a run in the third inning to tie the game at one. In the bottom of the third, Adams knocked in a run on a single scoring Carolin to take a 2-1 lead through four innings. University of Mary tied the game at two in the fourth inning. Wolves answered again pushing one run across on a solo home run by Hall to retake the lead 3-2. The Marauders tied the game in the top of the fifth inning and pushed one more run in the eighth to take 4-3 lead. Wolves loaded the bases before back-to-back two run hits by Schmidt and Stilson. Marauders loaded the bases in the ninth inning but could not push a run across to give the Wolves a 7-4 victory over the Marauders to force a split.

Carolin tallied three hits and three runs scored in the game two victory. Stilson also notched three hits and drove in two runs. Hall recorded a multi-hit game with two hits, two runs, and drove in one run. Schmidt tallied two hits, one run scored, and drove in three runs. Mikey Adams recorded a hit and drove in one run in the victory.

Colton Landreth picked up the no-decision for NSU going 5.0 innings giving up six hits, three runs, two earned runs, and struck out one. Sam Krapf entered the ballgame in relief going 2.0 innings gave up one hit, one walk, and one strikeout. Nate Zeise picked up his first win of the season going 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits and struck out one batter. Brock Ragatz picked up his first save of the year recording the final out of the game.  

The Wolves are back in action Wednesday at University of Minnesota Crookston. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at UMC Baseball Field against the Golden Eagles.
