Wolves Drop Game Two to Split with Golden Eagles

Crookston, Minn. – The Northern State University baseball team split with University of Minnesota Crookston 4-3 and 6-10 Wednesday. After the split, the Wolves record moves to 14-16 overall and 7-11 in NSIC play.

In game one, NSU scored in the first inning on a run scoring single from Dakota Stilson that scored Jack Schmidt. The Wolves added another run in the third inning on a single by Justin Barreneche that scored Stilson. Crookston scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. Northern State pushed two runs across in the sixth inning on a passed ball that scored Jeffery Disla and a Schmidt single that scored Hall. Minnesota Crookston scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Wolves held on to the 4-3 victory.

Three players for NSU tallied two hits in the first game; Schmidt, Lorenz, and Barreneche. Schmidt and Barreneche also notched a run batted in. Dakota Stilson recorded a hit, one run scored, and drove in one run.

Thomas Sertic started the game for the Wolves going 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on one hit, walked three hitters, and struck out four. Grant Farmer improves to 1-1 on the season pitching 2.2 innings, gave up one run, did not allow a hit and struck out three. Luke Chevalier picked up his first save of the year pitching the seventh inning allowing zero hits and struck out two batters.

Northern State started the scoring in game two pushing one run across in the second and two more runs in the third inning. The run in the second inning was scored on a bunt single by Tyler Hair that scored Hayden Hall. On the first pitch of the third inning Schmidt blasted a solo home run to extend the lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, Hall hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Stilson. The Golden Eagles answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give them the lead 3-5. Wolves cut the lead to one in the sixth inning on a bunt single from Adams that scored Barreneche that cut the lead to 4-5. NSU tied the game at five in the sixth inning on a solo home run from Ben Carolin. Later in the inning, the Wolves scratched one more run across on a fielder's choice that scored Stilson to take a 6-5 lead. Crookston put another five run inning on the Wolves in the seventh inning as NSU drops game two of the doubleheader.

Northern State out-hit the Golden Eagles 13-9 in game two, Hall tallied a 2-for-3 game, scoring one run, and drove in two runs. Adams also recorded a two hit game with one run batted in. Schmidt notched two hits in five plate appearances scoring one run and knocked one run in. Stilson tallied a 2-for-4 game scoring two runs and walked once. Hair, Carolin, and Barreneche each recorded one hit in game two.

Colten Landreth started for the Wolves going 3.2 innings giving up three runs on two hits, walked three, and struck out three. Tyler Jones did not record an out of the bullpen giving up two runs, on two hits, and walked one batter. Andrew Nichols took the loss dropping to 1-1 on the season going 2.2 innings giving up four runs, on four hits, walked two, and struck out a season high seven batters. Holt Hunziker came in relief and walked the only hitter that he faced. Brock Ragatz pitched 0.2 innings and gave up one hit. Mike Wiesmann pitched the eighth inning not allowing a baserunner and struck out two.

Wolves return to Fossum Field for senior weekend on Saturday and Sunday against University of Minnesota Duluth. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday against the Bulldogs.
