Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team picked up a sweep against the University of Mary 7-2 and 7-1 on Saturday. With the sweep the Wolves improve to 12-14 overall and 5-9 in NSIC play.
In game one, Wolves started the scoring in the first inning when
Lucas Lorenz stole second base and
Jack Schmidt scored on the throw. NSU added five more in the second inning on a wild pitch that scored
Mikey Adams.
Dakota Stilson and Lorenz hit back to back double to take a 6-0 lead after two innings. University of Mary added a run in the third and fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-2 through four innings.
Ben Carolin completed the suicide squeeze to score
Hayden Hall in the fifth inning to secure a 7-2 victory in game one.
Stilson and Lorenz each tallied a double and two runs batted in the victory.
Ben Carolin added the other run batted in.
Justin Barreneche and
Kolin Kubitz had one hit in game one.
Patrick Leary tallied one hit in two plate appearances.
Thomas Sertic started the game and improved to 2-3 on the season pitching 5.0 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, and four strikeouts.
Brock Ragatz pitched 2.0 innings in relief allowing zero hits and struck out one batter.
Wolves scored the first runs again in game two as they pushed two runs in the third inning on a two run home run from
Jack Schmidt that scored Carolin. Wolves added three more in the fourth inning as Kubitz knocked in a run on a single,
Hayden Hall knocked in a run on his single, and
Seth Sullwold scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5-0 through four innings. University of Mary answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-1. Northern State scored one run on an Adams single that scored Lorenz to push the lead back to 6-1. Carolin hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the eighth inning that scored Kubitz to complete the sweep.
Kubitz and Lorenz notched two hits as Kubitz also tallied a run batted in. Schmidt had one hit in five plate appearances with a run scored and two runs batted in. Stilson and Adams each went 1-for-4 in game two. Barreneche had one hit and scored a run in the victory.
Tyler Jones picked up his second win of the year improving to 2-1 on the season going 5.0 innings, giving up two hits, one run, and walked two.
Mike Wiesmann picked up his first save of the season going 4.0 innings, allowed two walks and struck out three.
The Wolves are back in action Sunday against University of Mary at Fossum Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. against the Marauders.
