Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball team dropped both games of the double header Wednesday against Minot State 6-2 and 8-2. With the losses, the Wolves dropped to 9-13 overall and 2-8 in NSIC play.
In game one, Minot pushed three runs in the first and two in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Dakota Stilson notched a two-run double to score
Mikey Adams and
Jack Schmidt who both hit singles. Minot State added one more run in the sixth to take the 6-2 victory over the Wolves.
Schmidt and Adams each tallied a single and a run scored in the loss. Stilson knocked in the only two runs that NSU scored on his double.
Lucas Lorenz,
Hayden Houts,
Justin Barreneche, and
Hayden Hall each had a hit for the Wolves.
Luke Chevalier dropped to 3-2 on the season going 5.2 innings, giving up 11 hits, six runs, five earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Mike Wiesmann came into relief and pitched 1.1 innings giving up one hit, walked one, and struck out one.
In game two, no team pushed a run across until the fourth inning when Minot State pushed four runs across. They added a single run in the fifth and sixth inning to push their lead to 6-0. Wolves answered with two run in the bottom of the sixth, Adams reached on a walk and scored the first run on a Minot State error. Stilson hit a single that drove in Barreneche, who notched a single. Minot State added runs in the eighth and ninth inning to complete the sweep.
Barreneche notched one hit in three plate appearances and score one of two runs in the second game for the Wolves. Stilson also tallied one hit and drove in the only run for Northern State. Hall notched a single in the ninth inning. Adams scored one run and walked twice for NSU.
Thomas Sertic drops to 1-3 on the season going 5.1 innings giving up seven hits, six runs, five earned runs, one walk, and a season high eight strikeouts.
Holt Hunziker pitched 1.2 innings in relief giving up his first run of the season, with three walks, and striking out one.
Nate Zeise came into relief and pitched one inning, walking one batter and struck out the side.
Andrew Nichols pitched the ninth inning giving up one run on no hits and striking out three.
The Wolves return to action this weekend at Wayne State College. The games are set for Saturday and Sunday pending weather. First pitch on for Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m. against the Wildcats.
