Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University baseball split the home opener against Minnesota State 4-5 and 2-0. After the split, the Wolves record moves to 10-14 overall and 3-9 in NSIC play.
In game one, Minnesota State opened the scoring in the second inning pushing one run across to take the early lead. Wolves answered with two runs in the third inning on
Jack Schmidt's double that scored
Ben Carolin and
Mikey Adams who each singled earlier in the inning. Mavericks tied the game in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Wolves tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Carolin who scored
Kolin Kubitz, who walked to start the inning. Schmidt reached on an error that scored Adams who doubled earlier. Mankato scored one run in the eighth inning to take game one.
Adams tallied two hits in two plate appearances, scoring two runs, and notched two runs batted in. Carolin went 1-for-3 for the Wolves, scored one run, and drove in one run. Schmidt tallied the last hit for NSU and notched two runs batted in. Kubitz tallied one hit in three plate appearances scoring one run.
Thomas Sertic started on the mound, going 3.0 innings, gave up three hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out two.
Sam Krapf was the first pitcher out of the bullpen going 1.1 innings, giving up three hits, three runs, walked one, and one strikeout.
Nate Zeise went 1.0 inning and gave up two hits.
Luke Chevalier took the loss dropping to 3-3, going 2.2 innings, not allowing a hit, gave up one run, and tallied three strikeouts.
In game two, the game was scoreless through four innings before the Wolves broke threw in the fifth. Three singles from Carolin,
Hayden Hall, and Kubitz loaded the bases with no outs.
Jack Schmidt flew out to centerfield that scored Carolin.
Dakota Stilson singled later in the inning that scored Hall.
Carolin notched two hits in three plate appearances and scored one run. Hall tallied one hit and scored a run. Adams,
Lucas Lorenz, and Kubitz each notched one hit, Stilson added one hit and a run batted in.
Colton Landreth started on the mound going 1.2 innings giving up zero hits, zero runs, walked one, and struck out two.
Grant Farmer in his first appearance of the year went 1.1 innings, did not allow a hit and walked one batter.
Andrew Nichols picked up the win picking up his first win on the season going 2.0 innings, giving up two hits, while striking out one.
Holt Hunziker picked up his team leading third save of the season going 2.0 innings walking three and striking out two.
Northern State returns to Fossum Field this weekend against the University of Mary. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and Sunday is scheduled for 12 p.m. against the Marauders.
