Omaha, Neb. – The Northern State University baseball team drop two games to Augustana University on Sunday afternoon with scores of 4-2 and 10-0. The Wolves drop to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in NSIC play following the first weekend of league action.
In game one, the Wolves scored first in the top of the third inning picking up two runs on four hits. Augustana answered in the bottom of the inning with one run on one hit. Augustana pushed two more runs across in the fourth, giving the Vikings the 1-run lead. Augustana grabbed an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Wolves were unable to answer, finishing the contest with two runs on six hits and one error. AU notched four runs on four hits and tallied one error on defense.
Leading the Wolves was
Justin Barreneche with two hits in four plate appearances, scoring one run, and one stolen base.
Jack Schmidt recorded one hit in three at-bats with one run scored.
Dakota Stilson went 1-for-2 with one run batted in and one walk.
Lucas Lorenz and
Ben Carolin notched the final two team hits for the Wolves, with Lorenz adding an RBI.
Luke Chevalier took the loss for the Wolves going six innings giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and one walk. Chevalier struck out six in the loss, after making his third appearance of the season.
In game two, the Wolves were shutout, notching just one team hit and leaving four runners on base. Augustana scored in the first, third, and fifth innings, combining for 12 hits and ten runs and securing the run rule victory over the Wolves.
Kolin Kubitz notched the lone hit for the team in the top of the second, while Carolin,
Hayden Houts, and Barreneche each drew walks.
Sam Krapf started on the bump and suffered his second loss of the season. Krapf threw 3.0 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits and three walks, while striking out two.
Tyler Jones entered in relief, throwing 1.1 innings giving up three earned innings, on five hits, walking one, and striking out one. Colten Landreth struck out three hitters in one inning of work, while
Nate Zeise went 1.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits.
Brock Ragatz was the final Wolf to take the mound, facing two batters in the bottom of the sixth.
The Wolves are back in action next weekend against Southwest Minnesota State. Double-headers are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in Marshall, MN. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. Sunday against the Mustangs.
