Omaha, Neb. – The Northern State University baseball team split a conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon versus Southwest Minnesota State. NSU took game one 4-0, however suffered a 12-2 loss in the second game. The Wolves move to 7-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play following the split. Monday's games against the Mustangs have been cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Both teams were scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Wolves put a runner on base. With a runner on second,
Jack Schmidt legged out an infield single, which forced an errand throw by SMSU, scoring the first run of the game. A couple hitters later
Seth Sullwold ripped a single to right field, scoring Schmidt and putting the Wolves up 2-0. NSU added two more runs on a balk and throwing error to seal the 4-0 win in game one.
The Wolves finished with six hits in the game and did not commit an error.
Luke Chevalier threw a complete game shutout giving up two hits, striking out three, walking four. The junior improves to (2-1) on the year.
Schmidt led the Wolves with two hits in three plate appearances, scoring two runs, while walking once.
Ben Carolin and
Dakota Stilson added one hit and one walk in the victory. Sullwold tallied the only run batted in for NSU on his only hit of the game.
The Wolves struggled to string hits together against game two starter John Bezdicek, as NSU notched just two runs on three hits. The Mustangs pushed two runs in the second inning and added four more in the third inning, for the 6-0 lead.
Northern pushed a couple of runs across in the fourth inning on a 2-run double by Stilson. Southwest answered with runs in the fifth, sixth, and eighth, sealing the run rule win.
Stilson went 2-for-3 in the loss with two RBI, as the Wolves notched just three team hits. Schmidt finished the contest with one hit and one run scored, while Carolin grabbed the final run scored.
Sam Krapf suffered his third loss of the season going 2.1 innings giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.
Thomas Sertic was the first pitcher in relief going 0.2 innings giving up one run on two hits.
Zach Hartford came out of the bullpen and threw 1.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits.
Colton Landreth and
Andrew Nichols each pitched 0.2 innings giving up two and one run respectively.
Tyler Jones finished the game going 1.1 innings giving up one run on two hits.
With Monday's cancellation, the next contest for the Wolves is a conference double header against St. Cloud State scheduled for Tuesday in St. Cloud. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 against the Huskies.
