Aberdeen, S.D. - In their second home meet of the 2016-17 season, the Northern State University swim team was defeated by the University of Sioux Falls Cougars 95-109. With the victory USF improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Wolves drop to 1-9 early in the season. NSU saw 25 season best races in 43 total splashes from the 11 event meet.
The dual started in competitive fashion, as the first event, the 400 yard medley relay, ended with the top two teams finishing just .59 of a second apart. Northern State's Edda Skoric,
Kady Harris,
Hannah Kastigar and
Kayla Sproles completed the relay in 4:02.96 to nab second place in the heat.
Sophomore
Kalina Emaus followed up with another second place finish for the Wolves, this time in the 1000 yard freestyle. Emaus hit the wall at 11:16.56 in the long race, behind first place finisher, Mackenzie Crane. Emaus also picked up a top-3 finish in the 200 yard butterfly, finishing in 2:15.64.
Hannah Kastigar led NSU with two of the team's three first place finishes in the dual. Kastigar beat out competitors in both the 200 yard IM and the 200 yard butterfly, finishing 2:05.76 and 2:02.92 respectively. The junior's time in the 200 butterfly was enough to defeat her own school record, set previously this year. Kastigar continues the own five school records early in the season.
The final Northern State first place finish came in the 100 yard breaststroke, as freshman
Kady Harris completed the race in 1:09.07 before six other swimmers. Harris followed up with a third place performance in the 100 yard free, notching a time of 55.75. Both
Gentry Musgrove and
Makyl Ziegler reached personal records in the meet. Musgrove finished the 200 yard butterfly in 2:26.48 and Ziegler hit the wall in the 100 yard breaststroke at 1:14.21.
Northern State will continue action next week on Tuesday, November 8th, facing Augustana University on the road. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. from Sioux Falls, S.D..
