Wolves Kick Off NCAA Central Region Tournament Tomorrow Versus Pitt State

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University women's basketball team will continue their postseason run, Friday from Hays, Kansas. The Wolves are slated to play Pitt State at 12 p.m. from the campus of Fort Hays State. 

The Wolves enter the weekend on a seven game win streak and the NSIC Conference Tournament Title. Northern blazed past No. 19 Wayne State College in the championship match-up lead by Megan Mutchler with the game of her career. Mutchler tallied 18 points, eight rebounds, and a career high seven assists in the win. Mutchler and fellow senior Sadie Stotesbery were named to the All-Tournament team, while Rachel Krogman was named the tournament MVP. Krogman has been a workhorse for the Wolves this season leading the team at 16.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. She ranks 26th in the nation in rebounding, and ninth in double-doubles with 19 thus far. Northern State continues to lead the nation in scoring defense with a 51.4 points per game mark this season. Defensively, the Wolves have been strong this season in games where they have shut down the opponents leading scorer. Offensively, Northern is 22-1 this season shooting 40 percent or better and 22-0 defeating their opponents by ten points or more.

The Gorillas enter the central region tournament after a 53-67 loss to Emporia State in the MIAA Conference Tournament. Pitt State finished third overall in the MIAA with a 15-4 conference record, sitting behind regional appearing teams Fort Hays and Emporia State. The Gorillas led the conference in scoring offense this season, averaging 73.6 points a game. In the opening weeks of the season, PSU tallied wins versus NSU conference opponents Concordia, Bemidji, Southwest, and Duluth. Senior Lizzy Jeronimus leads Pitt State in both scoring (18.7) and rebounding (5.4) on the year. As a team, the Gorillas are strong shooters from the floor and three-point range, while outscoring their opponents by 14.7 points per game. The Gorillas and Wolves have not faced-off in the history of the two programs.
