Box Score Wayne, Neb. – The Northern State University women's basketball team struggled on the road in a 57-58 loss to Wayne State College. Northern falls to 19-5 overall and 13-5 in conference play, dropping two games behind the Wildcats in the overall conference standings.
Trailing by two heading into the second half of play, Northern fought back from a 13 points deficit mid-way through the half, to gain the lead with a 1:17 on the clock. The Wolves hurried back on defense, to hold the Wildcats to a missed shot and regain possession with 28 seconds to play. Northern was unable to connect with net and gave up the decisive team turnover, resulting on the winning bucket by WSC senior Jordan Spencer.
Rachel Krogman led the Wolves with 18 points and 17 rebounds in the defeat, matching her season and career highs for single game rebounds. Krogman was perfect from the foul-line, while adding three assists.
Sadie Stotesbery followed with 15 points and eight rebounds, going 7-for-12 from field goal range.
The Wolves out-shot their opponents 40.3 percent to 34.7 percent in the game, however costly turnovers push the Wildcats above NSU. A total of 14 Northern turnovers resulted in 19 Wayne State points. Northern out-rebounded WSC by nearly 20, at 46-28 in the game, while racking up 14 second chance points.
Megan Mutchler notched eight points and six rebounds, while
Devon Brecke tallied seven points and four assists.
Kara Hofschild and
Lauren Deadrick entered off the bench for the Wolves, recording three and four points respectively. Deadrick added three rebounds and two assists in the game.
NSU returns home next weekend for the annual I Hate Winter festivities. Northern is set to tip off with the Huskies of St. Cloud State at 6 p.m., on Friday, and the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth at 5 p.m., on Saturday.
