Tournament Game ReleaseAberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University women's basketball team will host Southwest Minnesota State in the opening round of the NSIC Sanford Health Women's Basketball Tournament. The Wolves will tip-off at 6 p.m. versus the Mustangs.
The Wolves secured both the North Division title and home court advantage in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament, with wins over Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State a weekend ago. The Wolves opened the weekend with a 68-52 victory over the Golden Eagles, and capped off the regular season with a 78-54 victory over the Beavers. Northern out-rebounded UMC by 20 on Friday, and BSU by 22 on Saturday, marking the sixth time this season the Wolves have out-rebounded their opponents by 20 or more.
Rachel Krogman has been a standout for the Wolves this season leading the team in scoring (16.3), rebounds (10.8), field goal percentage (50.9), and blocked shots (1.2).
Devon Brecke has added a much needed spark for the Wolves raising her season averages to 7.9 points and 2.8 assists per game.
About SMSUThe Mustangs are 3-23 overall and 3-19 in the Northern Sun, as the eigth seed from the South Division. Annessa Rosch leads the Mustangs averaging 12.0 points per game. Lauren Hedlund is second on the team with an 11.6 points per game average. The pair are the main attack for SMSU and recorded a combined 31 points versus the Wolves earlier this year. As a team, Southwest is averaging 59 points per game, while giving up 76.4 points per game to their opponents.
Earlier this Season The Wolves fell 52-53 earlier this season. Krogman led the Wolves with 16 points and nine rebounds in the loss, while Waytashek and Stotesbery added 13 and ten points respectively. NSU is 14-1 at home this season, and 44-15 all-time versus SMSU.
