Wolves Secure Weekend Sweep of Dogs with 27 Point Victory

Aberdeen, S.D. – In search of a little payback after a 61-64 loss two weeks ago, the Northern State University women's basketball team defeated St. Cloud State 77-50 from Wachs Arena. The Wolves extend their home win streak to 11 games as they are 19-3 on the season and 15-3 in the league. NSU has now won five straight games as the head into the finally two weeks of the conference regular season.

Five different Wolves scored double-digit points in the win, as the team shot 42.2 percent from floor. NSU scored a season high 51 in the second half of play, going 18-34 from field goal range. Freshman Paige Waytashek came out with a bang in half two connecting for three straight buckets from the arch in just over two minutes. Waytashek ended the night with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Rachel Krogman was the leading scorer yet again for the Wolves, notching 15 on the night. Krogman hit the glass for nine rebounds and connected for five assists and two steals in the win. Both Alison Kusler and Megan Mutchler tallied 12 points in the win, with Mutchler recording one more rebound with six on the night. With the teams second most rebounds, at seven in the game, Sadie Stotesbery snuck into the double-point club adding ten to the team total.

The Wolves were able to hold the Huskies to a team field goal percentage of 27.1, with Jessica Benson being the leading scorer of the night with 14. Strong defense by Northern, resulted in 15 points off of 16 SCSU turnovers throughout the game. Compiling only one more rebound on the night with 43, the Wolves were able to score 19 second chance points. The 19 points came off 14 offensive team rebounds in the match-up.

A combined effort from the NSU bench of Waytashek, Katrina Kjerstad, Alexis Tappe, Bethany Crosswait and MyKenzie Spaulding dropped 27 points in the win. Throughout the season, Northern has been a force to be reckoned with in the paint and tonight was not different as the team scored 30 points from the zone. Northern improved its free-throw shooting from a night ago, going a perfect 7-7 in the first half and shooting 78.3 percent in the game.

Northern will take to the road next weekend as they travel south to match-up against the Wildcats of Wayne State and the Vikings of Augustana College. The Wildcats currently lead both the NSIC north and overall standings in the conference with their two losses coming against Concordia-St. Paul. Game time with WSC is set for 6 p.m. on Friday. The Vikings and Wolves will then face off Saturday at 4 p.m. from Sioux Falls.
