Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University women's basketball team continues to play well from home securing the victory in a physical match-up with Winona State. The Wolves improve to 16-3 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC. A key stat for the Wolves this season, rebounding, was highlighted throughout the game as they broke the single game NSIC season record with 62 on the night.
The Wolves were led by junior
Megan Mutchler who shot 6-14 from the floor scoring a total of 13 points in the victory.
Rachel Krogman was pressured throughout the game by the Warrior defensive, but was able to contribute on fronts other than scoring bringing in a season high 17 rebounds and adding eight assists. Krogman also led the team with three out of the team's six blocks in the game. Solid defensive was played all around by the NSU squad as they held the Warriors to a 27.9 field goal percentage and 37.5 free-throw percentage. The loss marks the first time since exhibition games against Minnesota and Wisconsin that the Warriors have scored less than 50 points.
Northern garnered some much needed help from the bench as five Wolves combined for 28 points.
Paige Waytashek and
Devon Brecke led the attack from the bench scoring ten and nine points respectively and combining for five of the team's seven three-point baskets. Brecke came out in a blaze going 3-4 from three point range, while Waytashek was the leading statistical shooter for NSU going 4-8 from the floor.
Hitting the glass for 21 offensive rebounds, the Wolves connected for 22 second chance points in the victory. Northern's largest lead of the game, 19 points came with four minutes remaining in the second half and the team never looked back. Winona State's only lead of the game came only five minutes in with a score of 4-5.
The Wolves will be back in action tomorrow from Wachs Arena as they take on the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. between the two squads with the men's game to follow.
