Rapid City, S.D. – With a score of 51-35, the Northern State University Women's Basketball team won their first game of the 2013-14 season against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The Wolves are now 1-0, while the Hardrockers sit at 0-3 on the year.
Northern was led by juniors
Megan Mutchler and
Rachel Krogman. The duo accounted for all Wolf free throws on the night shooting 81.8% as Mutchler was a perfect 4-4 from the line and Krogman an excellent 5-7. Krogman recorded her 1
st double-double of the year scoring 15 points and pulling in 16 rebounds, six of which were offensive. Mutchler added the team second best of 12 points in the win, shooting a stellar 80% from the floor.
Starters for NSU included: Mutchler, Krogman, Brecke, Kusler, and making her Northern debut freshman
Paige Waytashek. The Wolves out-rebounded the Hardrockers 48-34, pulling in a total of 15 offensive boards; five of which came from junior
Sadie Stotesbery who totaled seven on the night. A strong first half of 34 points propelled NSU to the victory, as Mines came out on top in the second half out-scoring the Wolves 21-17.
Senior
Alison Kusler was a strong source of leadership throughout the game for NSU playing all but three minutes and adding nine points and four rebounds. All of Kusler's buckets came from the long ball as she was 3-7 from the arch.
Devon Brecke and Kusler each notched three assists in the match-up.
Northern will continue their weekend road trip tomorrow as they take on the Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State University. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. between the two teams. The Wolves will open the home season next Saturday (11/23) with a 2 p.m. start against Central Methodist University.
