WAYNE, NEB. – The second ranked team in the country and top seed in the Sanford Health Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament, Wayne State (27-2, 21-2 NSIC) utilized freshman Yossi Ashton with 20 points, a career high, and All-American Ashley Arlen scored 18 points as the Wildcats defeated the Northern State (15-14, 10-13 NSIC) 74-42 in the first round of tournament action.
Northern State opened the game by taking a both a two point and three point lead before the nation's three-point field goal percentage leaders took flight. The Wildcats hit six of seven trey attempts in the first half, just under half (13-26) of their field goal makes.
The Wildcats used a 16-3 run in the first half to take a 37-19 lead into the intermission break.
The second half got underway as
Emily Becken sank a three point basket to cut the lead to 15 points. However, that is the closest the Wolves would get as Wayne State secured the 74-42 victory over the Wolves.
The Wolves were led by
Mikayla Barondeau with 13 points and five rebounds while jenna Higgins had 10 points and seven rebounds.
In the game Becken moved up the all-time scoring ladder as she tied Tami Jones for 12th all time with 1,328 points in her career while Barondeau secured her 800th rebound for the Wolves, ending her career with 803.
The loss ends the season for the Wolves, as seniors
