SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Traveling to take on the in-state rival and scorching hot Augustana College (18-4, 15-3 NSIC) the Northern State Wolves (13-11. 8-10 NSIC) were looking to make a move in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conferece standings while senior
Mikayla Barondeau was looking for her 1,000th career point.
The Wolves were unable to overcome a six point deficit at halftime, never holding a lead in the second half in the 72-61 loss to the Vikings.
After giving the Vikings an 18-1 headstart in the first meeting of the season, the Wolves took care of business jumping onto the scoreboard first.
Barondeau got the suspense of with early by hitting a three-point basket with 14:49 remaining to pull the Wolves within one point at 12-11. Baroneau became the 28th member of the 1,000 point club for Northern State.
Entering the intermission break the Vikings held a 39-33 advantage over the Wolves.
The Vikings were able to get 12 first half points off of nine wolves turnovers, compared to just two points for the Wolves on two Viking turnovers.
The second stanza started with the Vikings going on an 8-0 run, running over from the first half, to open up a 44-33 lead.
Northern State would maneuver the lead to just two points with 14:07 remaining as Barondeau sank two free throws.
That two point disadvantage is the closes the Wolves would get as the Vikings proved too strong, forcing 19 turnovers and making 18 free throws.
Barondeau led the Wolves with 18 points and nine rebounds, while
Alison Kusler had 14 points and five rebounds.
The Wolves will have a quick turnaround as they take on the Wildcats of Wayne State, the leaders and preseason favorites in the NSIC, in Wayne, Neb. with a 4 p.m. matchup.
