MINOT, N.D. - Northern State sophomore forward Mega Mutchler exploded for a career-high 23 points to pace Northern State to a key 72-57 road win over Minot State Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball action.
The win snaps a mini two-game skid for the Wolves, who improve to 5-2 on the season and 1-2 in NSIC play. Minot State suffered its first loss of the season and now stands at 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the loop.
Mutchler was 9-for-13 from the floor in Saturday's effort, easily her best performance of her career. The 6-foot-1 sophomore teamed with teammate
Alison Kusler (17 points, 4 steals) for 40 of NSU's 72 points. Kusler canned a trio of treys and was 4-for-5 from the line, as the Wolves shot the ball at a 45.0 percent clip from the floor, well above their previous two NSIC efforts.
Mutchler and Kusler were also amongst four Wolves with seven rebounds in the win. NSU out-rebounded the host Beavers by a 48-26 margin, including 17 offensive boards that lead to 13 second-chance points for the Wolves.
The Beavers needed all of five seconds to take the early lead on one of their five treys on the night. NSU sophomore
Rachel Krogman, however, put the Wolves up for good with a lay-up at the 15:18 mark and NSU never looked back. The Wolves closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a double-digit lead into the break. NSU's 15-point edge at game's end marked its largest of the night.
MSU was paced by a 20-point, 9-rebound effort from Carly Boag. Sacarra Molina added 14 points and Morgan Klose nine. Molina and Klose combined to score all five Beaver treys.
Northern State returns home next weekend to host St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Duluth in another key weekend of NSIC play. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, while Saturdays contest is set for a 5 p.m. start.
