Coach Fredrickson reaches milestone in victory

ABERDEEN, S.D. - With the chance to give Coach Curt Fredrickson his 700th career win in front of the home crowd, the Northern State (8-4, 4-3 NSIC) women's basketball team did not disappoint in the 77-49 victory over the Upper Iowa Peacocks (0-10, 0-9 NSIC).

The Wolves jumped out of the gate scoring the first seven points of the contest, five coming from sophomore Alison Kusler and a jumper from senior Mikayla Barondeau.

The Peacocks would counter with a 12-0 run, capped by an open three by Laura TerHark, a 40 percent 3-point shooter.

Freshman Sadie Stotesbery would stop the run for the Wolves, after Erin Rabenberg got a steal and found Stotesbery for the three.

For the next ten minutes of the first half, the two teams would ensue in a back-and-forth battle. The Wolves would take the lead with 5:21 remaining in the half, which they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Capped with a Caitlin Farroh jump shot, the Wolves would have a 13 point lead with six seconds left in the first half.

In the second half, the Wolves would hit six of their season high 12 three point treys, to open up a lead that reached as many as 28 points three different times.

Kusler led the Wolves with 15 points, which would be matched as a game-high from Whitney Kieffer of the Peacocks.

Two freshman also helped the cause with career high's of ten points apiece for Megan Mutchler and Caitlin Farroh. Emily Becken would chip in nine points to go along with four assists of the teams season high of 22.

The Wolves shot 40.8 percent in the game, hitting 12-24 from long range, while allowing the Peacocks to shoot 41.9 percent on 18-43 shooting.

Upper Iowa was forced into 21 turnovers by the Wolves which led to 27 points off of turnovers. Opposite, the Wolves tied a season low in turnovers with just nine on the night.

The story of the night however was Coach Fredrickson gaining his milestone victory, where he became just the second coach in NCAA Division II and 16th coach in all divisions to reach 700 victories. After the contest, Fredrickson was joined on court following the game by his family for a ceremony in his honor. Coach Fredrickson has amassed a career record of 700-249, currently in his 33rd season at the helm of the Wolves.
