BEMIDJI, Minn. - A day after the Bemidji State University Beavers put an end to a five-game Northern State win streak with a doubleheader sweep, the Wolves returned the favor on Saturday, handing the Beavers a pair of two-run losses on their home field to salvage the series split. The Wolves won by final scores of 4-2 and 3-1.
With the sweep, the Wolves - winners of seven of their last nine games - are now 11-18 on the year and 9-12 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate conference play while the Beavers slipped to 15-20 overall and 9-12 in league action.
NSU junior
Zach Miller homered in each game and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three more driven in on the day to lead the way. Miller hit a solo shot in the top of the first in Game 1 and scored the go-ahead run after drawing a lead-off walk in the top of the seventh.
Robbie Rocamora doubled and scored in the fifth and singled and scored as an insurance run in the seventh of that game.
NSU senior
Lucas Jung worked around a rocky first inning to win his third straight game for the Wolves. Jung stranded four BSU runners in scoring position and struck out four batters amidst six total hits.
Dillon Talley and
Jesse Gonzalez drew back-to-back lead-off singles in the top of the fifth in Game 2, both coming around to score on two-out singles from
Ronnie Sellers and Miller to put the Wolves up 2-0. BSU responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to slice the lead in half.
Miller's lead-off homer in the eighth, however, put the Wolves back up by two and sophomore reliever
Thane Lees closed out the game for his fourth win of the season. Lees allowed just one hit in his five innings of work and struck out three.
Rocamora started the game for the Wolves, allowing six hits and just one run, but left in the bottom of the fifth with a no-decision.
