ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The Northern State women's basketball team (5-2, 1-1 NSIC) earned their first conference win of the season in a road contest against St. Cloud State (3-3, 0-2 NSIC) that featured 12 lead changes at six ties.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a
Mikayla Barondeau jumper and two
Alison Kusler free throws.
The home Huskies would take an eight point advantage with 6:03 remaining in the first half.
The Wolves would turn up the defense for the final 5:06 seconds as the Huskies would be held scoreless. NSU picked away at the Husky lead taking the scoreboard advantage with 1:56 remaining.
Emily Becken sank two free throws to give the Wolves the 29-28 lead.
The Wolves would go into the half with a five point advantage thanks to back to back jump shots from
Jenna Higgins.
The second half saw déjà vu for the Wolves. A day previously, the Wolves saw a Concordia-St. Paul team jump out with an 18-5 run to start the second half. In this contest, the Huskies raced out of the gates with a 13-4 run to take a 41-38 lead early in the second half.
After trading baskets, the Huskies would work to a 54-48 lead before a Becken three would cut into the deficit with ten minutes remaining.
Brittany Euerle would sink a jump shot and Becken sank two free throws for the Wolves lead with 8:55 remaining in the game.
The Wolves worked a lead to five points, with a Kusler free throw helping to bring to that lead.
The Huskies would fight back with two free throws of their own from Aaryn Booker.
With the outcome still in doubt, Coach Fredrickson called a time out with 45 seconds remaining. Coming out of the time out and the shot clock running low, Kusler took a jump shot from 17 feet out that lead to an offensive rebound by
Sarah Hintz.
Under 30 seconds remained, with the shot clock turned off, the Huskies were forced to foul.
Emily Becken calmly sank both free throws for the five point Wolves lead.
Jordi Gerking of SCSU took a highly contested three point basket that swished through the net.
The lead now at just two with 11 seconds remaining, the Wolves inbounded to Becken who was immediately fouled. Going back to the free throw line for the tenth time this game, Becken calmly sank both free throws again.
With less than ten seconds remaining, the Huskies were unable to get a shot off leading to the final score of 71-67 in the Wolves victory.
The Wolves were lead by the senior Becken, who had 17 points. She was aided with 10-11 free throw shooting. Higgins had 14 points on 7-11 shooting from the field, while
Sarah Hintz had 11, and Barondeau had ten for the Wolves. This was the first time this season the Wolves had four players in double figures.
The wolves shot 25-49 for the game, good for 51 percent while the Huskies were 25-64, good for 39 percent from the field. The Huskies hit nine three point baskets out of 24. The Wolves were 1-4 from long range.
Hintz lead the Wolves with eight rebounds, Barondeau had seven, while Becken swiped five for the Wolves.
The Wolves return to action on Friday December 9, against #4 Wayne State in Aberdeen. Coach Fredrickson will be looking for his 698th win of his career in the game that will be televised on Midco SportsNet at 6 p.m.
