ST. PAUL, MINN. – The Northern State Wolves women's basketball team took to the court verse a conference foe for the first time during the 2011-12 season, fell to the Concordia Golden Bears 68-58. The Wolves (4-2, 0-1 NSIC) were offset by a career-best 24 point effort by Carissa Wolyniec of the Golden Bears (4-3, 1-0 NSIC) and a scorching 64 percent from behind the three point line.
The Golden Bears jumped out of the gates with a 16-11 lead with 11:07 in the first half before the Wolves started a comeback starting with a
Mikayla Barondeau free throw.
The Wolves would go on a mini 7-0 run to take the lead, with help from an
Emily Becken three-point basket, a
Jenna Higgins steal, and two free throws from Becken. Higgins would finish off the run with a layup assisted from Barondeau.
After taking the lead in the first half, the Wolves opened up a six point margin with 4:01 left in the first half on a Becken jumper.
The Golden Bears would tie the game up at 27 apiece when Wolyniec connected on her third three point basket of the half.
Barondeau would have an answer with a three point trey of her own just 12 seconds later, with an assist from
Brittany Euerle.
At the intermission break, the Wolves would keep the three point lead.
The second half saw the Golden Bears jump out on an 18-5 run, lead by six three point baskets. Wolyniec hit three for herself, in her 24 point effort for CSP.
Higgins would hit a layup at the 9:37 mark to stop the run for the Golden Bears.
The Golden bears would go on a 6 point mini run to bring the score to 62-45 with 4:09 remaining.
That is all CSP would need as the Golden Bears would hold off the Wolves last comeback fight with the final score ending 68-58.
The senior Becken lead the Wolves with 19 points in 37 minutes of action. Junior
Sarah Hintz set a new career high with 13 points while Barondeau had ten for the Wolves in double digits.
The Golden Bears were helped with three players in double digits, namely Wolyniec who set a career best 24 points on 8-12 shooting, while being 6-9 from beyond the arc. Jodi Batzel also had 16 points for the Golden Bears.
The Golden Bears shot 24-45 for 53 percent from the field while the Wolves hit 21-54 for 39 percent from the field. The Golden Bears were aided with a 9-14 night from the three point line and beyond, good for 64 percent. The wolves shot 4-12 for 33 percent from behind the three point line.
The Wolves continue the conference road trip with a 4 p.m. matchup at St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn.
