GAME NOTES
SETTING THE STAGE: After bad weather changed the schedule layout of last weekend's match-ups and this weekend's games as well, Northern State will travel north this weekend for a pair of games in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action. The Wolves will take on Minnesota Crookston on Saturday at 2 p.m. and will play MSU Moorhead Sunday at 2 p.m.
SIZING UP THE COMPETITION: Minnesota Crookston (5-6, 2-5 NSIC) is coming off a weekend of NSIC action resulting in a 1-1 split. The Golden Eagles took on Southwest Minnesota State on Monday night in Marshall, where they defeated the Mustangs in a 67-60 decision. UMC was led by Jamie Zelinsky who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Bri Zabel contributed 17 points and four boards to the Golden Eagles' cause. Minnesota Crookston traveled to Minnesota State on Tuesday night where the Mavericks handed them a 69-67 loss. The Mavericks finished shooting 43 percent from the field, compared to the Golden Eagles who shot 44 percent. MSU scored 20 of its 31 points in the second half off turnovers.
MSU Moorhead (7-4, 4-3 NSIC) had a rough weekend of play dropping two NSIC matches to MSU and SMSU. A solid second half of play from the Mavericks lifted the team over the Dragons in a 71-57 fashion. MSU Moorhead was led by Angie Jetvig with 17 points and nine boards. By defeating the Dragons 68-59 on Tuesday, SMSU snapped a six-game losing streak. Jetvig led MSU Moorhead again with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT: The Wolves traveled south on Monday and Tuesday for their first games of the new year to earn an NSIC split by defeating Upper Iowa 72-69 on
Emily Becken's three-pointer at the buzzer, and falling to Winona State 65-56 on Tuesday after leading by as much as 11 at one point in the second half. The Wolves overcame a 14 point deficit in the first half against Upper Iowa before trading points with the Peacocks for much of the second half before Becken's last second shot sealed a Northern State victory.
A career high 15 points from
Brittany Euerle was not enough for Northern State who was defeated by Winona State in a 65-56 decision on Tuesday. Becken hit a lay-up at the end of the first half to give NSU its first lead of the game at 28-27.
Brittany Euerle led Northern to start the second half rallying off seven straight points before Winona State answered back. Northern held the Warriors to a ten point deficit for most of the half before a Winona State run cut the lead to six. The Wolves answered the run with a pair of baskets from Kayla Barondeau and
Alison Kusler to extend the lead to 11.With the score at 47-36, Winona began a six-point run to cut Northern's lead to three at 47-44. The Warriors then ran away with the score to finish with 65 to the Wolves' 56.
