ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Northern State women's basketball team earned its first home win of the new year when they defeated Minnesota State, Mankato 70-57 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate action at Wachs Arena on Friday night.
Northern improves to 10-5 (7-4 NSIC), while MSU moves to 8-6 (5-5 NSIC).
By defeating the Mavericks, the Wolves snap a five-game losing streak against MSU which includes two losses to the team last season.
The Wolves started the game on an 11-2 run in the first four minutes with five points from Becken, two baskets from Reinschmidt and a lay-up from Rabenberg.
NSU extended the lead to 17-2 at the 13 minute mark before MSU called a time out. The Maverick's Alli Wilkinson answered the Wolves' run with two points before Becken drained her second three from the wing putting the Wolves up 20-4.
MSU went on a 17-8 run in the next seven minutes to put the score at 28-19 cutting Northern's lead to just nine. The Wolves allowed MSU to get within six points with 40 seconds left in the half before a Reinschmidt layup gave Northern an eight point, 34-26 lead going into the locker room.
Reinschmidt led the NSU going into the half with 16 points and four boards followed by Becken who went 2-3 from three-point range to end the half with 12. Rabenberg grabbed five boards and two blocks.
NSU made another 8-0 run to start the second half before MSU answered at the 15 minute mark on a basket from Wilkinson.
After extending the lead back to 14, the Mavericks slowly began to chip away at NSU's lead to get within nine points on a Jennie Noreen jumper at 10:32.
Brittany Euerle answered back in the next 30 seconds with her own jumper to return the lead to double digits.
MSU made one final run of the game capitalizing on four straight turnovers from the Wolves rallying off 18 points to Northern's five, cutting NSU's lead to 7 with just less than three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Wolves answered the final Maverick run hitting nine of 10 free throws in the final two and half minutes of the game to finish with a 13 point lead.
Northern State will take on Southwest Minnesota State tomorrow night at Wachs Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
