KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Northern State University sophomore pitcher Kelli Bornander notched her second shut-out in as many starts on Tuesday, tossing a 2-hitter in a five-inning 8-0 win over Chestnut Hill University to start the day. NSU's offense fell silent in the night-cap, however, as the University of Charleston blanked the Wolves by the same count in six innings
Bornander's win – her third of the season – capped a 3-game win streak for the Wolves, while the day's split moved the team to 4-8 on the young season. NSU has four games of a 12-game slate remaining at the Rebel Spring Games.
In Game 1, the Wolves scored at least one run in all but the third inning, including two runs in each of the first two stanzas to jump out to the early lead. Sophomores Whitney Luhring and Brittany Huback each collected two hits apiece as part of eight total NSU hits.
Huback and fellow sophomore Cat Zimmerman each smacked out a double, while shortstop
Brooke Norris picked up her first triple of the season in that game.
Game 2 was a different story, as the Wolves managed just three hits while committing three errors that led to six unearned runs in an 8-0 loss to Charleston. UC scored four of their eight runs – all unearned – with two outs in the inning.
Luhring, sophomore
Ashley Gabler and junior Kelley Suggs each had one hit apiece for the Wolves, who, other than those hits, went down in order three times in six team at-bats.
The Wolves return to the field tomorrow for two more games against Saginaw Valley State, ranked 13th in the national preseason poll, and Tiffin. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m. (EST), respectively.
