CHADRON, Neb. – The Chadron State College Eagles held newly appointed Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week
Mikayla Barondeau to a mere 10 points and only four trips to the free throw line, but had no answer for senior forward
Jodi Reinschmidt, who put up 20 points, four rebounds and four assists to lead the Wolves to a 63-53 win on the road over the Eagles Monday night in non-conference women's basketball action.
The win concludes a stretch of three games in four days for the Wolves, now 3-1 to start the 2010-11 campaign. CSC, which was picked tenth in the preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference poll, slipped to 0-2 on the young season.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead, gaining a 17-6 advantage with 11:18 to go in the first half and pushing it to a 23-8 edge with 7:53 to go. Back-to-back treys by Kaitlin Petri and Kattie Ranta, however, sliced the lead back to single digits, as the Eagles closed the half on an 11-4 run.
The first portion of the second half set off a see-saw battle between the two teams as the Eagles never got closer than seven points, while the Wolves couldn't stretch their lead past 12 points until a pair of Reinschmidt free throws made it a 54-41 game with six minutes left in the game.
That broke open a wild stretch of play in which the Eagles cut a 16-point NSU advantage to just six in just over two minutes of action. The Wolves recovered in the waning minutes of the contest, however, and used a 6-2 run in the last 1:41 of the game to seal the victory.
NSU senior
Krista Rabenberg added another 10 points for the Wolves to become the third player in double figures in the scoring column. Barondeau and junior
Brittany Euerle each snagged nine rebounds to lead a strong NSU effort on the boards. The Wolves finished with a 47-33 advantage in total rebounds, including a 14-5 edge in offensive rebounds.
Petri scored 19 points on the strength of 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line for the Eagles, while Kelsey Scott added 11.
NSU is off for the Thanksgiving holiday, but will resume action on Dec. 3-4 at home. The Wolves kick off NSIC play that weekend, playing host to Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and St. Cloud State on Saturday. Both contests tip off at 6 p.m.
