BISMARCK, N.D. – Strong shooting and rebounding was the recipe for success in Bismarck, N.D. Saturday for the Northern State University women's basketball team, as the Wolves used three double doubles in defeating the University of Mary Marauders 76-65 in NSIC basketball action.
The win evens up the Wolves overall record at 7-7, and improves their conference record to 3-4 after an 0-4 start to the conference season.
The Wolves have now won four straight after losing the prior five games.
The two teams battled to a 20-20 tie through the first ten minutes of the game before the Wolves went on an 18-2 run through the next six minutes, giving them a 38-22 lead with 4:00 to go in the first half.
They then battled even through the remaining four minutes with the Wolves heading into halftime with a 40-26 lead.
Juniors
Jodi Reinschmidt and
Krista Rabenberg led the way in the first half, with Reinschmidt collecting 13 points and eight boards in the first stanza on 5-5 shooting, and Rabenberg notching 12 points on 6-7 shooting.
The Wolves held a 24-12 advantage in scoring in the paint in the first half, and also held a 12-2 advantage in second chance points.
The first half advantage gave the Wolves the breathing room to battle back-and-forth with the Marauders through the second half, and emerge with a 76-55 victory.
Northern State shot 50.3% from the floor and took home a 42-30 advantage in rebounding on the night.
Jodi Reinschmidt was one of four Wolves in double figures, and set a career-high with 21 points on 7-9 shooting, featuring 7-10 shooting from the free throw line. She also recorded a career-high tying 13 rebounds, to give her the seventh double double of her career, and her third in the last four games. She added
Mikayla Barondeau followed suit by notching 15 points and 13 rebounds to give her the fourth double double of her season, and the tenth of her career. The sophomore shot 4-9 from the field, including 3-6 from long range, and added three assists and a steal while playing the entire game.
Fellow sophomore
Emily Becken notched 17 points (after only scoring two in the first half) and added a career-high 11 assists to give her the first double double of her career. She finished the day by shooting 6-10 from the floor, including 5-6 shooting in the second half. She also shot 2-3 from three-point land in the second half, and had three rebounds and two steals while playing the entire game.
Krista Rabenberg was the fourth member in double figures, notching 14 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor. The junior added four rebounds, four blocks, and three assists on the night.
The Wolves will next be in action on Friday, January 15th, when they travel to Bemidji, Minn. to battle with the 9-6 (3-5 NSIC) Bemdiji State Beavers.
