BOX SCORE
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Second half defense. Three little words that made a huge impact Saturday night at Wachs Arena, where the Northern State University women's basketball squad held the visiting Huskies of St. Cloud State to an astounding 12.9% shooting in the second half en route to a 66-47 NSIC victory.
The win moves the Wolves back to 9-9 overall, and 5-6 in the Northern Sun.
The first half was very close and tough, with the officials not calling too many fouls inside. That allowed junior
Krista Rabenberg to have a field day, grabbing her first double double of the year with a 23-point (career-high) 15-rebound (career-high) performance. She was a main instigator of the smothering defense the Wolves unleashed in the second half, and notched five blocks on the night.
The first half concluded with the Huskies holding on to a 32-29 lead, but that would disappear soon, with the Wolves tying up the score 34-34 at the 16:52 mark of the second half on a free throw by junior
Jodi Reinschmidt. Her second make on that trip would give the Wolves a 35-34 lead that would not be relinquished the remainder of the game.
The Wolves held the visitors to just 27.6% shooting in the game. The Huskies entered halftime shooting 7-11 from the three point line to give them a three-point advantage, but they would go 0-8 the rest of the night in finishing out their worst shooting night of the season.
Mikayla Barondeau added a double double as well (sixth of the season, 12th of career) with a 21-point 13-rebound performance that included 8-14 shooting from the floor, five steals, and two assists.
Jodi Reinschmidt was the third member in double figures with an 11-point 8-rebound performance, adding three assists on the night as well.
The Wolves will look to have two performances like this next weekend when they host MSU Moorhead on Friday and Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday.
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
