ABERDEEN, S.D. - It was a reversal of fortunes Saturday at Wachs Arena, as the normally stellar shooting Winona State Warriors were held to a season-low 31.4% shooting, and the Northern State Wolves shot 46.3% from the field in earning their first NSIC win of the season 66-47 in front of 2,354 fans on
Don Meyer Court.
The Warriors entered the contest third in the NSIC in shooting percentage with an average of 42.2% per game, and the Wolves entered the game last in the NSIC with an average of 37.7% in conference games. Winona State was held to a season-low 47 points in the loss, and before Friday they had not scored less than 60 points all year.
The win improves the Wolves to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC, and they have now won their last two games after dropping the previous five. The Wolves have now won eight of the last 11 matchups between the two teams, and hold a 5-1 advantage in the last six contests inside the friendly confines of the Barnett Center.
The Wolves jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through the first 4:04 of the game, and they increased their lead to 22-13 at the 4:57 mark of the game on a jumper in the paint by junior
Jodi Reinschmidt.
The Wolves went into recess with a 29-22 lead, and held the potent Warrior attack to a meager 28.6% shooting in the first half.
The Wolves increased their lead to as much as 22 points at one point in the second half, and never surrendered their lead once during the game.
Reinschmidt,
Mikayla Barondeau, and
Krista Rabenberg would use a size advantage to give the Wolves a 30-16 scoring advantage in the paint, and that advantage would be the major storyline of the night.
Reinschmidt's second-consecutive double double (and sixth of her career) led the Wolves with her personal season-high 15 points and her career-high tying 13 rebounds. The junior shot 6-11 from the floor and also added four assists, two blocks, two steals, and just one turnover in 38 minutes of action.
Mikayla Barondeau followed Reinschmidt on the stat sheet with 12 points in 32 minutes of action.
Junior
Krista Rabenberg was the third member of the squad in double figures, notching 11 points and six rebounds on 5-9 shooting from the floor.
The Wolves will look to continue their recent hot streak when they host the 1-10 Upper Iowa Peacocks tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Wachs Arena.
