GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Senior
Stephanie Connolly scored her first goal in more than a year, while junior
Summer Swan put away her first goal of the season as the Northern State University Wolves battled the host University of Sioux Falls to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on Tuesday in non-conference soccer action. It was the second straight double-overtime tie for the Wolves, who are now unbeaten in their last four games and are 2-3-2 overall on the year.
The Fighting Sioux slipped to 1-4-1 on the young season.
UND's Sarah Penner scored both goals for the Fighting Sioux, the first of which came just 4:49 into the match. Kelsey Zachman played a cross into the box, where Penner was able to put a header past NSU goalkeeper
Dee Wood, who recorded 6 saves in her 110 minutes in the net.
The Wolves responded with just 1:26 left in the half, evening the match with Swan's first goal of the season. That goal came from 15 yards out off a crossing pass from sophomore
Kaylee McDonald.
UND again wasted little time in the second half to regain the lead on Penner's second strike of the game and third of the season. Mandi Boehmer collected the assist as Penner slid the ball just inside the right post from 10 yards out.
NSU evened the match again in the 60th minute of play, as Connolly took a corner kick from sophomore
Kailee Hyland and headed it into the net. The goal was the first of the season for Connolly, who missed the majority of the 2008 season due to a knee injury.
The Wolves managed two more shots on goal in the remaining minutes of the game, but UND's Lauren Sera made the stop on both shots, leaving the score tied.
NSU also came up with three shots on goal in the overtime periods, but Sera again kept the Wolves off the scoreboard. UND, meanwhile, collected their ninth and final shot on goal at the 63:30 mark in the second half.
