BOX SCORE
MARSHALL, Minn. – The Northern State Wolves women's basketball team battled back from an eight-point deficit Saturday against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, but a Northern shot with 1.9 seconds left went long and the home squad survived with a 50-49 victory in Marshall, Minn.
The Wolves close out their season with a 12-15 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the Northern Sun. The Mustangs also closed out their season Saturday, and finish with a record of 14-16, and 6-14 in the NSIC. Neither team will be competing in the NSIC Tournament next weekend.
The Wolves collectively shot 18-52 from the floor (34.6%), including 3-12 from behind the three point line (25.0%). They out-rebounded the Mustangs 47-33, but 20 turnovers were enough to keep the Wolves playing catch-up through the first 3/4 of the game.
Mikayla Barondeau led the Wolves with her sixth double-double of her freshman campaign, going for 12 points and 14 rebounds on the night.
Krista Rabenberg had a quiet 11-point night (nine in the second-half) and was a big part of the Wolves second-half comeback. Junior guard
Lennea Mueller also contributed 11 points and three steals, and like Rabenberg, was instrumental in helping the Wolves during their second-half comeback.
The young Wolves will not graduate any seniors this year, as in years past (Northern State graduated all five starters a season ago). This year's squad was fielded by 11 freshman, six sophomores, and three juniors (two of which were redshirted to begin the season.)
Northern State University is an NCAA Division II affiliated school participating in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and is located in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
